February 10, 2017: SHERIFF'S SPECIAL NEWS RELEASE
On February 10, 2017, at 2:20 PM, the Green County Sheriff’s Communication Center received a 911 report of a two-car accident at the intersection of Melvin and Clarno Roads, in Clarno Township, south of the city of Monroe.
Sheriff and Monroe First Response units arrived within minutes to render aid and extinguish a fire on one of the vehicles. Green County EMS was summoned to assist with multiple injured. Subsequently, three persons were airlifted to the UW Hospital in Madison, while one was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial reports indicate that a westbound sedan was traveling on Melvin Road, when it failed to stop at the intersection and collided with a northbound truck. Speed and failure to stop are considered factors for the sedan in the crash. The condition of all the injured was last reported as critical, and all identities are being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.
The roads were closed for approximately six hours to permit investigation by Sheriff's Deputies and the Wisconsin State Patrol Traffic Accident Reconstruction Unit. An update will be provided as more details become available.
