Motor Vehicle Crash-Fatality:
On Friday, October 20, 2017, at 6:10 PM, Deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash with injuries in the W600 block of STH 11, Town of Spring Grove. Investigation revealed that Nathan L. Leopold, 44, of Janesville, was eastbound on STH 11 when he reported that he fell asleep. Leopold’s vehicle crossed the centerline and collided with a westbound vehicle operated by a 70-year-old Juda resident.
A passenger in the 70-year-old Juda's resident vehicle was a 12-year-old female from Brodhead. The 12-year-old was wearing her seat belt and was injured in the crash. The 12-year-old was transported by EMS to Mercy Hospital. The 70-year-old Juda resident was wearing their seat belt and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Green County Coroner’s Office. The air bags deployed in their vehicle. Leopold was injured in the crash and was transported by EMS to Mercy Hospital. It appears that Leopold was wearing his seat belt and the air bags deployed in his vehicle.
Both vehicles sustained severe damage and were towed from the scene.
Leopold was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle While Under the Influence (drugs). Leopold was also cited for Operating Left of Center.
The following agencies assisted at the scene: Brodhead Fire Department, Brodhead EMS, Orfordville EMS, Green County EMS, Green County Highway Department, Wisconsin State Patrol and the Green County Coroner's Office. The crash remains under investigation. This is Green County’s fourth fatal collision and its sixth fatality. The names of the 70-year-old Juda resident and 12-year-old passenger are being withheld pending notification of family.
