January 28, 2018:  SHERIFF'S SPECIAL NEWS RELEASE

At 2:57 PM, Deputies, along with Brodhead Fire Department and Brodhead EMS, responded to a two-vehicle crash on State Hwy. 81, at County Hwy T, Town of Spring Grove.  Investigation revealed that a vehicle operated by Colton P. Van Marter, 21, of Beloit, was southbound on CTH T.  Van Marter failed to stop at the stop sign and traveled into the path of an eastbound vehicle.  The eastbound vehicle was operated by Robin M. Smith, 52, of Beloit.

Smith's vehicle collided with the front passenger side of Van Marter's vehicle.  Van Marter’s vehicle entered the ditch, colliding with a sign post, and then traveled a distance into the field.  Smith's vehicle entered the ditch and came to a rest.  Smith sustained non-life-threatening injuries; her seatbelt was used and the airbag did deploy.  Smith was transported by EMS to a local hospital.  Smith's vehicle sustained severe front-end damage and was towed from the scene.

Van Marter sustained life-threatening injuries and was flown by UW-Med Flight.  Van Marter was not wearing his seatbelt and his airbags did deploy.  Van Marter's vehicle sustained severe passenger-side damage and was towed from the scene.

As a result of the investigation, Van Marter was cited for: Operating a Motor Vehicle Intoxicated, Causing Injury-2nd Offense, Fail to Stop at a Stop Sign, Operating While Revoked, Operating a Motor Vehicle with No Insurance and Failure to wear seatbelt.  He was released pending court.

Agencies assisting at the scene were: Orfordville EMS, Town of Beloit Paramedics, Rock County Sheriff's Office, Brodhead Police, Mercy MD-1 and Green County Highway Department.

The Sheriff’s Office reminds the public that criminal charges are merely an accusation and that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
