Driver:             Gerald K. Heimann, age 54, rural Gratiot, WI

Passenger:       Kenneth C. Heimann, age 85, rural Gratiot, WI

Passenger:       Kristina J. Heimann, age 14, rural Gratiot, WI

Passenger:       Nancy A. Heimann, age 58, rural Gratiot, WI

Passenger:       Jeremia J. Haferbecker, age 5, rural Gratiot, WI

Passenger:       Sophia M. Winters, age 13, rural Gratiot, WI

Initial investigation has revealed that Jeremia, who was seated in the rear middle seat, was not wearing a safety belt and Katherine M. Heimann was riding in the rear cargo area of the SUV and was not restrained.  The remaining occupants were reported to be wearing safety belts.  The SUV sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene.  Some of the victims remain hospitalized while others have been released and are attending to their family.  The family was in the process of traveling to the Wisconsin Girls State Basketball Tournament in Green Bay, WI to watch the Blackhawk Girls Basketball Team.

Driver of Semi tractor/trailor (hauling whey):

Kurt G. Hardie, age 58, Fond du Lac, WI

Hardie was wearing a safety belt and has apparently been released from the hospital.

It was determined that the Heimann vehicle did collide with one of several deer that had crossed STH 69 in the path of the SUV and he was taking evasive action to avoid colliding with the others when struck from behind by the semi.  There were no indications that alcohol, cellular phone distractions, or any controlled substances had any involvement in the crash.

Deputies will forward investigative reports to the Green County District Attorney upon their completion and the District Attorney will evaluate those reports for any possible charges.  No citations were issued on the date of the incident.

STH 69 was reopened shortly after 1:30 p.m. by the Green County Highway Department, who supplied barricades and signage.

No additional information on the extent of the vehicle occupants’ injuries is currently available.

Jeff Skatrud

Green County Sheriff

On Friday, March 8, 2019, at approximately 5:49 a.m., the Green County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 calls reporting a two-vehicle crash on STH 69, between Monticello and New Glarus.  Deputies, along with fire departments from New Glarus and Monticello, were sent to the scene along with ambulances from New Glarus, Monroe, Albany, Belleville, Brooklyn and Fitchburg.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a sport utility vehicle was northbound on STH 69, when it slowed for deer crossing the highway.  The sport utility vehicle was struck from behind by a northbound semi tractor and trailer, forcing the SUV off of the road into the ditch.

Nine occupants of the SUV were transported to hospitals in Monroe and Madison by ambulance.  The semi driver was also transported to a hospital.  No information is available at this point regarding the severity of the injuries.

It is anticipated that STH 69 will be closed for most of the morning while the Wisconsin State Patrol reconstructs the crash.  Additional information will be provided when it becomes available.

Janesville Police had previously issued an area-wide attempt to locate on the suspect and vehicle.

Shortly after their arrival, a Monroe Police Officer reported that he had located the suspect vehicle traveling westbound on State Highway 11, near the City of Monroe.  The vehicle continued westbound and as Deputies and Officers prepared to make a traffic stop, it turned into the driveway of the suspect’s residence in the W7900 block of STH 11.  Deputies activated their emergency lights and sirens and the vehicle fled into a snow-covered field with an all-wheel-drive Sheriff’s squad in pursuit.  The pursuit traveled through the field, merged onto STH 11, and proceeded eastbound on STH 11 toward the City of Monroe at speeds of approximately 90 m.p.h.  The pursuit continued eastbound around Monroe and continued through the Townships of Jefferson, Sylvester, Spring Grove, and Decatur.  Brodhead Police set up a tire deflation device on STH 11, near CTH GG, but the suspect vehicle was able to avoid driving over the device and continued into the City of Brodhead, where the speeds of the pursuit slowed significantly.  The suspect traveled through the City of Brodhead, until turning westbound on CTH F, traveling about one mile until turning onto Crazy Horse Lane, which is a campground and mobile home community.  The suspect vehicle came to a stop in a private driveway, the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle exited the vehicle upon command and was seen tossing a handgun into a nearby snowbank.  The suspect was taken into custody by a Green County Deputy and was later turned over to Janesville Police, who also impounded the suspect vehicle and recovered the firearm.  It was later determined that relatives of the suspect resided in the residence where the apprehension occurred.

No injuries were reported to any law enforcement personnel or the suspect.  No patrol vehicles appeared to sustain any damage. Roads had been cleared and were primarily dry during the pursuit and traffic was reported to be light to non-existent.  Details regarding the suspect and the homicide investigation will be released by the Janesville Police Department.
